World Pilot Gig Championships 2011

Crews, Coaches, Coxons and Cheerleaders all attended the World Championships in the Scilly Isles. Friday 29th April - Sunday 1st May.

The Mens crews battled it out amongst 124 gigs. Competition was very feirce in group B this year, making promotion very difficult. The Mens A Crew rowed amazingly well to keep the Weymouth name firmly in the mix. The Mens B Crew set a new club record for the club. Excellent rowing all round.

123 ladies crews took part in the competition this year. The Ladies A Crew saw their best ever result for the club - well done girls!

In the Veterans category the Ladies came 41st out of 52. The Men were able to put out two crews and finished at an amazing 9th and 47th position out of 64.

21st May 2011: Round Hayling Race

Weymouth Rowing Club members were invited by Langstone Cutters Rowing Club to their annual 'Round Hayling Race'. This 13 mile endurance race circumnavigates Hayling Island in Hampshire. Based on the great river race, boats of many shapes and sizes were given staggered start times. Cornish Pilot Gigs were last to be started, some 30 minutes behind the first vessel.

The Weymouth crew set a steady pace and, with the great coxing skills of Heddon Johnson, they crossed the finish line in 1st place! They also set a new race record of 2:06:52. Well Done Kurt, Heddon, Mark, Clive, Rhys, Justin and Ian.
